Eau de parfum or eau de toilette: what the label announces
On a bottle, the words eau de parfum or eau de toilette first place the product on a scale of strength. An eau de parfum holds more fragrance oil and so less alcohol; an eau de toilette holds less, giving a thinner liquid that is often livelier at the start. Houses also use the EDP vs EDT labels to offer one signature in several forms.
The scale is a market convention. No authority sets an exact cut-off for each term, which is why two brands can both say eau de toilette and mean juices of very different strength. The label works for comparing two versions of one scent and far less for comparing two scents from different houses.
The difference between eau de parfum and eau de toilette in percentages
Reference works give ranges that do not match. English Wikipedia lists about 5 to 15 per cent aromatic compounds for eau de toilette and 15 to 20 for eau de parfum, with roughly 10 and 15 as usual figures. The French edition gives 7 to 12 per cent for eau de toilette and 12 to 20 for eau de parfum.
In both, the eau de parfum is the stronger one, and that is the only safe certainty. The exact gap varies by house, and the English article points out that one brand’s eau de toilette can contain more aromatic material than another’s eau de parfum. Reading the difference between eau de parfum and eau de toilette as a fixed ratio, such as “twice as strong”, would therefore mislead.
Dior Sauvage: two product pages, two balances
Dior offers a textbook case of eau de parfum vs eau de toilette with Sauvage, sold as an eau de toilette and an eau de parfum. The two pages carry different olfactive headlines: citrus and peppery notes for the first, citrus and vanilla notes for the second. Calabrian bergamot appears in both, but the toilette stresses Sichuan pepper, Ambroxan and elemi, while the parfum relies on a Papua New Guinea vanilla accord and woody patchouli.
So this is not one recipe diluted differently; the balance of materials changes. The house describes the eau de parfum with a powerful, noble trail and the eau de toilette as fresh, intense and woody-amber. Both come in 30, 60, 100 and 200 ml, and the 30 and 100 ml bottles can be refilled.
Diptyque Do Son: one tuberose, several formats
Diptyque’s Do Son collection shows another way to extend a signature. The house’s page lists an eau de parfum of 75 ml at 180 euros, with a 200 ml size at 350 euros, an eau de toilette of 100 ml at 155 euros and 50 ml at 112 euros, a hair perfume of 30 ml and a refillable solid perfume. These are the prices on the page consulted and may change.
The story comes from the house: co-founder Yves Coueslant spent summers in Do Son, a coastal town in Vietnam where sea breezes carried the scent of tuberoses. The page names tuberose, orange blossom, jasmine and amber wood to describe the eau de parfum, without detailing the notes of each version.
As another eau de parfum vs eau de toilette contrast, the example shows how a collection can multiply formats around one theme without publishing a percentage or a full pyramid for each. You still have to smell the versions that interest you.
EDP vs EDT: season, time of day and budget
Choosing between EDP vs EDT usually comes down to use, not theory. A lighter eau de toilette suits daytime, the office and heat; a denser eau de parfum suits evenings, cooler seasons or anyone who likes scent to stay close to the skin. Plenty of people own both versions of a favourite and alternate.
Budget matters too. At Diptyque the price gap between the 100 ml eau de toilette and the 75 ml eau de parfum is clear, but the number of sprays you need is not the same. Compare cost per wear rather than the sticker on the bottle.
And remember that staying power cannot be read from a label. It depends on skin, climate and application, and neither term guarantees a number of hours.
- Eau de toilette: daytime, heat, office, easy to top up.
- Eau de parfum: evenings, cooler weather, a more enveloping presence.
- Both: alternate with mood and moment.
- When unsure: try a discovery size before the big bottle.
- Always compare on skin, never only on paper.
Eau de toilette or eau de parfum: a three-step trial
To settle EDP vs EDT and learn whether eau de toilette or eau de parfum suits you, work in steps. Step one: smell both on blotters to drop whatever you dislike at once. Step two: apply one version to each wrist, or better, on two separate days, with the same number of sprays.
Step three: watch the development. Look for the moment the versions part ways for you, whether the opening, a floral texture or the base. Some prefer the eau de toilette for its movement and others the eau de parfum for its footing, and that sets no ranking valid for everyone.
If you test in a shop, avoid piling on more than three references. Leave with an impression, then let the scent unfold for several hours before you buy.
Common myths about eau de toilette and eau de parfum
Myth one: an eau de parfum is always better. It is stronger, not necessarily more successful. A well-built eau de toilette can please more than a heavier eau de parfum, and the reverse holds too.
Myth two in the EDP vs EDT debate: eau de toilette is for men and eau de parfum for women. Houses make both versions for everyone, as Sauvage and Do Son show. Myth three: a rule drawn from one example applies to every scent. Each house defines its creations and their variations in its own way.
It is wiser to treat each pair of versions as a separate case and rely on what the house describes and what your skin confirms.
Skin and storage precautions
Whatever the label, a fragrance contains substances that can cause a reaction in sensitive people. Test a small area before regular use and read the ingredient list, where the word parfum appears. In Europe, individual declaration of more than 80 fragrance allergens is required on products placed on the market after 31 July 2026. These reminders are not medical advice.
For storage, keep the bottle in its box, away from light and temperature swings. An eau de toilette, richer in alcohol and volatile notes, may tolerate hot storage a little less well, but no version is immune.
