A Roman jeweller turns to scent: the road from 1884 to 1992
Specialist sources describe Bvlgari as an Italian jewellery house founded in 1884 by Sotirios Voulgaris, a Greek immigrant. The V in the name is a Roman way of writing U, hence the pronunciation Bulgari. It later added leather goods, eyewear and hotels, and has belonged to LVMH since 2011.
Because the house is a jeweller first, a Bvlgari perfume is often judged by its flacon before its juice. Resist that reflex: the bottle tells you the collection, while only the label tells you the composition and the concentration, and those two details decide what you actually smell.
The first Bvlgari fragrance arrived in 1992: Eau Parfumée au Thé Vert, composed by Jean-Claude Ellena. The house says it began as a gift for its closest high jewellery clients. That origin helps explain the spirit of Bvlgari fragrances: scent as a gesture of hospitality rather than a mass-market product.
Eau Parfumée: neroli, tea leaves and a drawing-room freshness
The official page for Eau Parfumée Thé Vert lists a neroli petals accord and green tea extract, with fizzy bergamot and crisp young tea leaves. The current version comes in a redesigned 350 ml bottle with an upgraded formula that includes a natural tea extract.
The line has since grown. The house lists Thé Blanc (dated 2003 by Nstperfume) and Thé Impérial, which evokes Sri Lankan black tea. If you want a Bvlgari perfume without sugar or weight, this is the historic doorway, but judge it on skin rather than on the word tea.
Bvlgari Omnia: three gemstones, many flankers
Omnia dates from 2003 in reference databases. The collection draws on crystal, amethyst and red coral, with a tagline about the freedom of vibrant gems. Flankers followed: Crystalline in 2005, Amethyste in 2007, Green Jade in 2008, Coral in 2012, Indian Garnet in 2014, Paraiba in 2015 and Pink Sapphire in 2018, all according to the same reference page.
Anyone browsing Bvlgari perfume for the first time will meet Omnia early, since it is among the best documented lines. Master perfumer Alberto Morillas is credited by the house with the Crystalline and Coral eaux de toilette. That detail matters because Bvlgari Omnia is a series, not one scent, and each member has its own story.
Crystalline, Amethyste and Coral in practice
According to the official page, Omnia Crystalline eau de toilette takes inspiration from the aquatic transparency of the lotus, with nashi pear, bamboo, balsa wood and crystal musk. Amethyste is built on iris, pictured as gardens dappled with morning dew. Coral channels the sun of red coral with hibiscus notes. Three bottle colours, therefore, mean three different olfactive directions.
Crystalline eau de parfum and the refill
The eau de parfum of Crystalline is described as richer, with green mandarin essence, jasmine absolute and sandalwood essence. The house also notes that a 200 ml refill fits the 30, 50 and 100 ml bottles, which lets you extend a flacon you already love.
Bvlgari Le Gemme: a cap for every stone
Bvlgari Le Gemme presents itself as a collection of eaux de parfum built on exceptional ingredients. The official page lists eleven distinct names: Tygar, Amunae, Azaran, Yasep, Kobraa, Empyr, Gyan, Orom, Sahare, Onekh and Falkar. Tygar is also offered as an extrait de parfum and in a 10 ml travel size.
Each cap borrows from a stone: tiger's eye for Tygar, sapphire for Gyan, moonstone for Amunae. The page does not publish notes, perfumers or a launch date, so do not infer a scent from the colour. Samples settle the matter faster than any description, because two similarly coloured flacons can smell very different.
Most listings are 125 ml, a generous size that argues for testing a small bottle or sample first. With a Bvlgari perfume this size, a wrong guess costs more than with a 30 ml flacon, so the cautious route is to wear a sample for a full day, across morning, afternoon and evening, before committing.
Allegra, Man in Black and Goldea: other Bvlgari fragrances
The brand's fragrance listing also shows the Allegra line, including Passeggiata, Chill & Sole and Ma'Magnifica, the last described as a ravishing floral-woody. On the masculine side, Man in Black, listed among 2014 releases by Nstperfume, is classed as ambery spicy and sold in a set pairing a 100 ml eau de parfum with a 15 ml miniature.
Man Wood Essence, the Goldea line and Bvlgari pour Homme round out the picture; the latter, a woody musky eau de parfum, is credited to master perfumer Jacques Cavallier by the house. None of these overlaps with Omnia or Le Gemme: they answer more everyday or more masculine wishes. For a first Bvlgari perfume, the quickest comparison is one fresh tea eau, one Omnia and one Le Gemme sprayed on separate strips; the difference in intensity and mood usually shows within minutes.
Bvlgari eau de parfum or eau de toilette: read the full name
At Bvlgari one collection name often covers several concentrations. Omnia Crystalline exists as an eau de toilette and as an eau de parfum with different listed notes. A Bvlgari eau de parfum is therefore not simply a stronger copy of the toilette; it is its own composition.
Before buying, note the exact name, concentration, volume and, if possible, the version year. A bottle colour or a visual universe does not describe a composition, especially in a collection with several close shades. Reading a Bvlgari perfume label this way takes thirty seconds and prevents the most common disappointment, which is receiving a similar-looking but different scent from the one you meant.
Staying power and trail vary with skin and weather. None of the official pages consulted promises a particular duration.
Gifting and buying Bvlgari fragrances safely
For a gift, check version and volume separately from the look of the box. If the recipient already wears a Bvlgari scent, ask for its exact name instead of guessing from the memory of a bottle: Omnia has many members and Le Gemme eleven names.
Packaging lists the regulated allergens. If your skin is reactive, test a small patch first; this is general caution, not medical advice, and a health professional can answer a specific worry.
Prices differ by country and retailer, so verify them at the retailer. Be wary of a bottle priced far under the norm, with no original packaging or readable batch code: counterfeit perfume is illegal and can be unsafe. Stay with the house or an established distributor.
