Parfums de Marly: how to sample the house before buying a bottle

Parfums de Marly builds its identity on eighteenth-century France and names many of its scents after racehorses and lords. A catalogue that wide is hard to judge from a single bottle, which is why the house sells small-format sets. Here is what those sets hold, how the Delina Exclusif travel set is described and how to test patiently.

Parfums de Marly: a 2009 house inspired by Louis XV's court

According to Parfumo, Parfums de Marly was launched in 2009 by Julien Sprecher. Fragrantica describes a contemporary French house whose concept draws on eighteenth-century perfumery, when scent was central to aristocratic life at the court of Louis XV. The name points to the Château de Marly.

Horses are a design motif rather than the source of the name. Parfumo mentions them in connection with the bottle design and the founder's personal passion. Many fragrances carry equestrian or aristocratic names, among them Layton, Herod, Percival, Carlisle, Sedley and Godolphin.

All of this is house storytelling. It explains the visual world but says nothing about what a fragrance smells like, so the product sheets and your own trials should do the real work.

How the Parfums de Marly range is organised

Fragrantica lists 48 Parfums de Marly fragrances released between 2009 and 2026 and sorts them into families of products. The core line includes Layton, Herod, Percival, Carlisle, Greenley and Sedley. The Delina collection holds Delina, Delina Exclusif and Delina La Rosée. Arabian Breed brings together Habdan, Hamdani, Kuhuyan and Oajan, while Les Extraits includes Carios, Eragon and Valero, and Valaya has a standard and an Exclusif edition.

Parfumo supplies launch years for several of them: Godolphin and Pegasus in 2011, Herod in 2012, Oajan in 2013, Carlisle in 2015, Layton in 2016, Delina and Delina Exclusif in 2017, Percival in 2018, Sedley and Kalan in 2019 and Althaïr in 2023.

The spread of styles is the reason a discovery set makes sense here: two Parfums de Marly bottles can belong to very different scent families.

What the official discovery set collection offers

The American store describes its Discovery collection as a selection of iconic fragrances for him and for her, and lists seven sets. They include a masculine collection of five 10 ml bottles, masculine and feminine sets of seven 1.5 ml vials, a feminine selection of three 5 ml bottles with a case, a collector's coffret of eighteen 5 ml bottles, a set of three extraits at 5 ml and a feminine collection of four 10 ml bottles. A separate trio of 10 ml travel sprays also appears.

The listing does not name the perfumes inside every set, so reading each product sheet before ordering matters. A 1.5 ml vial is enough to recognise a style; a 10 ml bottle lets you live with a scent for several days.

Choosing between formats is a question of purpose. Seven tiny vials suit a browser who wants breadth and will discard most of them. Three or four larger bottles suit someone who already has a short list and wants to wear each scent through a full working day, including the dry-down hours that a quick spray never reveals.

Availability changes. At the time of reading, most of the sets on that page were marked sold out, so stock and offers need confirming with the house or an identified retailer.

Inside the masculine discovery set

The European sheet for the masculine set lists seven 1.5 ml vials, with the house's own family tags. Althaïr is tagged ambery, aromatic and vanilla. Althaïr Exclusif is ambery, woody and gourmand. Layton is fougère, ambery and fruity, Percival fougère, aromatic and powdery, Haltane woody, aromatic and oud, Greenley woody, citrus and fruity, and Sedley fougère, citrus and woody.

Someone drawn to fougères can compare Layton, Percival and Sedley side by side, while a fan of warm woods may look first at Haltane or Althaïr Exclusif. These tags come from the house and cannot replace your own impression.

The sheet adds that this festive set takes its inspiration from the first hot-air balloon ascent above the Marly estate. It also mentions a 40 euro voucher toward a full-size bottle, valid for 45 days, and a 40 euro price for the set; both are conditions to confirm at purchase.

Delina Exclusif and its refillable travel set

The official sheet for the Delina Exclusif travel set describes lychee and pear at the opening, a heart of Damascena rose and vetiver and a base of soft musk and warm vanilla. It calls the scent mysterious, intense and seductive and pitches it at frequent travellers. The concentration is not stated on that page.

The set contains a refillable travel case and three 10 ml refills, thirty millilitres in all. It suits someone who already loves the perfume rather than a first-time sniffer; a vial or a feminine discovery set is the gentler introduction.

After meeting other signatures from the house, return to Delina Exclusif. The comparison shows whether the mix of fruit, rose and vanilla still comes first, or whether a woodier or fresher scent now suits you better.

A patient routine for testing Parfums de Marly

Pick a set by its contents rather than by the masculine or feminine label. Those groupings are catalogue conveniences, not limits on taste, and you may prefer something filed on the other side.

Wear no more than two scents a day, one per wrist, and note your impressions after one hour and again after six. A paper blotter is useful for eliminating directions you dislike, but skin is what decides. Keep two or three finalists and retest them on another day, in different weather.

Move to a 10 ml bottle or a full flacon only after several consistent trials. Anyone sensitive to fragrance can patch-test a small area and ask a health professional if unsure.

Buying Parfums de Marly with confidence

Popular names attract counterfeiters. Fakes are illegal, their ingredients are unchecked and they can irritate skin. Buy from the house, an identified perfumery or an authorised distributor, compare the ingredient list with the official sheet and be wary of prices far below the market.

Prices and offers differ by country and date. Amounts quoted on official sheets, whether in euros or dirhams, apply only on the day of reading and should be verified with the retailer. Independent databases such as Fragrantica or Parfumo help cross-check notes, years and user opinions.

Keep the receipt and the outer packaging of any purchase, check that the batch code on the box matches the one engraved or printed on the bottle, and ask the seller about the return policy for opened fragrances before paying, since many retailers refuse returns once a bottle has been sprayed.

No commercial tie links this overview of Parfums de Marly to the house, and no commission is earned on any purchase.
