How to read a Jean Paul Gaultier fragrance before you buy

Any Jean Paul Gaultier fragrance comes with a cast of similar names: Classique, Le Male, Scandal, La Belle, Le Beau and a long line of flankers. The sculpted bottle catches the eye, yet the liquid is what you will wear. This is how to place each line, understand what the house says about it, and separate the styling from the scent.

From 1993 to 1995: how Classique and Le Male set the Gaultier vocabulary

Reference sources date the first Jean Paul Gaultier perfume to 1993, when it was sold as JPGaultier Eau de Parfum. It became Jean Paul Gaultier Classique in 1995, the same year Jean Paul Gaultier Le Male appeared. Classique is credited to perfumer Jacques Cavallier and Le Male to Francis Kurkdjian.

The pair created a pattern the brand still follows: one couturier idea, told through a feminine silhouette and a masculine one. Since 1 January 2016 the licence has been run by Puig, which now controls both the fashion and the fragrance sides of the label, so every line today is presented by a single group. For anyone discovering a Jean Paul Gaultier fragrance now, that means one group, one set of product sheets and comparable information from line to line.

The torso, the sailor stripe and the tin can

Classique is a female torso in a pink corset, a shape often compared with the corset the designer made for Madonna's 1990 tour. Le Male is a male torso in a striped sailor top. Puig links the sailor theme to Fassbinder's 1982 film Querelle, a reference the designer had in mind.

The metal tin packaging echoes a motif Jean Paul Gaultier has used in his collections since 1980, and the advertising by Jean-Baptiste Mondino, with its amorous sailor, finished the picture. All of this is styling: the bottle of a Jean Paul Gaultier fragrance tells a story about a silhouette. A bottle tells you about a silhouette; it says nothing about the balance of notes inside.

Today's Jean Paul Gaultier fragrance lineup at a glance

The house's own fragrance overview, read in October 2026, groups its offer into several families. Limited editions come and go quickly, so always confirm the exact name before reading reviews. Newer names such as La Favorite, offered in 30, 50 and 100 ml with a bottle designed as a pedestal, show that the catalogue keeps growing beyond the two classics.

  • Le Male: Le Parfum, Elixir Parfum, Elixir Absolu Parfum Intense, the eau de toilette and the limited Le Male in Blue.
  • Scandal: Scandal Elixir Parfum for her (80 ml) and Scandal pour Homme Elixir Parfum (150 ml).
  • Classique: a 100 ml eau de toilette plus a 2026 Pride edition shared with Le Male.
  • La Belle and Le Beau: eaux de parfum, Le Parfum versions and Flower editions.
  • Gaultier Divine, La Favorite and Les Ateliers Gaultier, a private collection of six fragrances.

Jean Paul Gaultier Le Male Le Parfum: cardamom, lavender, iris and vanilla

According to the official product sheet, Le Male Le Parfum, an intense eau de parfum, opens with cardamom, places lavender and iris at the heart and rests on vanilla. For this Jean Paul Gaultier fragrance, the house speaks of a woody oriental trail meant to express a leader's charisma. It comes in 75, 125 and 200 ml, in a black bottle styled as a gold-trimmed officer's uniform with matte and shiny sailor stripes.

Reference databases date it to 2020 and credit perfumer Quentin Bisch. The original Jean Paul Gaultier Le Male is described by Puig around mint, lavender and vanilla. Both share lavender and vanilla, yet cardamom and iris change the reading, so a shared name does not guarantee the same result on skin.

Jean Paul Gaultier Scandal Le Parfum: jasmine, salted caramel and black vanilla

For Scandal Le Parfum, an intense eau de parfum, the house announces jasmine meeting salted caramel and black vanilla. Its sheet files it under amber floral, with an intensity rated 3 on its own scale. The faceted bottle is covered in red lacquer and carries the legs motif of the line; sizes are 30, 50 and 80 ml.

Jean Paul Gaultier Scandal in this version plays the gourmand card openly. The ingredient list names regulated allergens such as linalool, limonene, citronellol, farnesol and benzyl benzoate. If your skin is sensitive, test a small area first and ask a health professional if you are unsure.

Reading a Jean Paul Gaultier perfume label: concentration, flanker, edition

Within this house one name often covers several liquids. Le Male exists as an eau de toilette, as Le Parfum, as an Elixir Parfum and as an Elixir Absolu Parfum Intense, while Jean Paul Gaultier Scandal alternates women's and men's versions. Each variant carries its own notes, sometimes far from the starting reference. That is why a review of the eau de toilette cannot be applied to an Elixir, and why the label on the box matters more than the family name.

A Jean Paul Gaultier perfume also carries wording that works as a signpost: Le Parfum for a more concentrated take, Elixir for a bolder reading, Flower or Pride for a limited run. Write down the full name and the size, for example Jean Paul Gaultier Classique 100 ml, so that you compare opinions about the same product.

A sampling plan that keeps the bottle out of the verdict

Choose a Jean Paul Gaultier fragrance by starting with two or three candidates at most. Smell them on blotters, then wear one per day on skin, noting the opening, the mid-afternoon stage and what is left the next morning on a worn sleeve. Leave a full day between tests so the impressions do not blur.

Then ask what really attracts you: the gourmand vanilla of Scandal, the lavender of Le Male, or only the shape of the flask. If it is the flask, a collector's object or a decorative set suits the wish better than a large volume you will rarely wear. Longevity and sillage depend on skin and weather, and no line can promise a fixed outcome. A short written note after each test, even two lines, is more reliable than memory a week later.

Gift sets and limited editions: when the container is not enough

A set only makes sense if its central fragrance already suits the person receiving it. Check what is inside: the size of the main bottle, any miniatures or body products, and above all the concentration, which should match the one you tried. Prices vary between retailers and seasons, so verify them with the retailer. If the set is a gift, keep the receipt details and ask about exchange conditions with the seller.

Collector bottles and limited editions of Jean Paul Gaultier Classique or Le Male sometimes surface on resale platforms. Stay with recognised retailers or the house itself: counterfeit perfumes are illegal and may contain unchecked substances, and a price far below official channels is a warning sign.
